A Study on the Optimal Penetration of Vehicle Fuel Types to Minimize the Costs Associated with GHG Emissions

초록

Major nations worldwide have recognized the seriousness of the global warming phenomenon and are promoting various policies to reduce GHG emissions, which are the main source of global warming. This study proposes a new optimal allocation model by vehicle type that minimizes the cost of GHG emissions in the transportation sector which is the second largest emitter after power generation in the energy sector, accounting for most of the GHG emissions. The transportation sector was dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles for the past 100 years but recently, eco-friendly vehicles such as electric vehicles have been rapidly expanding. The government has set the goal of spreading eco-friendly vehicles to reduce GHG emissions. However, the government is providing huge subsidies and tax benefits to promote eco-friendly vehicles, and if these are considered as costs, eco-friendly vehicles may be disadvantaged in terms of the total cost of GHG emissions. Therefore, the main difference between this study and previous studies is that it presents a model that derives a portfolio of vehicle types in the transportation sector from the issue of minimizing GHG emission-related costs. The scenarios consisted of the spread of electric vehicles from 20% to 40%, and the optimal proportion of each type of vehicle was derived by applying a genetic algorithm. The results show that internal combustion engine vehicles are more competitive than eco-friendly vehicles in terms of overall costs associated with GHG emissions, and electric vehicles are the most competitive among eco-friendly vehicles. The results of these experiments are expected to facilitate the establishment of efficient green policies.
