The Mediating Effect of Self-Compassion and Music Performance Flow in the Relationship Between Socially Prescribed Perfectionism and Music Performance Anxiety Among Professional Musicians

초록

This study examined how socially prescribed perfectionism influences music performance anxiety and investigated the mediating roles of self-compassion and flow within this process. Using data from 205 professional musicians, a sequential mediation model was analyzed through Hayes’s PROCESS Macro Model 6. Results indicated that socially prescribed perfectionism significantly increased music performance anxiety. Self-compassion emerged as the strongest mediator, substantially reducing the impact of perfectionistic pressure on anxiety. In addition, self-compassion facilitated higher levels of flow, which further reduced performance anxiety, indicating a significant sequential mediation effect. The direct effect of perfectionism on flow was not significant, demonstrating that flow is influenced indirectly through emotional regulatory processes grounded in self-compassion. Both the indirect effect through self-compassion alone and the sequential indirect effect through self-compassion followed by flow were statistically significant. These findings provide an integrated emotional attentional mechanism explaining music – performance anxiety and offer practical implications for implementing self-compassion-based interventions and flow-enhancing strategies in music education and performance settings.
