Estimation of Measles Epidemic Size: A Population Study, 1999-2001, South Korea

In 2000 a national measles epidemic occurred in Korean. To estimate the precise attack rate of measles, the surveillance data which was collected in sentinel schools from 1997, and the survey data which was carried out in 8 elementary schools of 2824 students in 1999 and 2001 were used. Total measles cases were estimated to be 75,000 in 4 million, in the student age population (1999year). The estimated epidemic size of measles among elementary school students during an epidemic can be used in the research field, and in the department of infection control, for national vaccine program evaluation.
