Inventing Classical Form: How Carl Czerny’s School of Practical Composition Constructed ‘Sonata Form’ for the Nineteenth Century

초록

This article re-examines how Carl Czerny’s School of Practical Composition (1848) constructed, rather than merely described, “sonata form,” shaping pedagogical and historiographical conceptions that persist today. While scholars acknowledge Czerny’s influence on nineteenth-century form theory, they have not systematically analyzed how his treatise actively invented “Classical” sonata practice through prescriptive language, strategic deployment of Beethoven as exemplar, and explicit polemics against contemporary compositional trends. Close reading reveals Czerny’s theory as an ideologically motivated retrospective construction that enc oded conservative aesthetic values during the revolutionary upheavals of 1848. Beyond this epistemological critique, the article advances an ontological claim: Czerny’s codification did not merely generate a distorted representation of eighteenth-century practice but constituted the very object, “sonata form” as a unified, coherent formal procedure, that it purported to describe. By situating the treatise within nineteenth-century canon formation, pedagogical institutionalization, and broader cultural politics, this study demonstrates how music theory functions not as neutral description but as an instrument of cultural regulation capable of retroactively constituting the phenomena it c laims to analyze
