Narrative Inquiry on the Career Decision Experience of Immigrant Youth: Focusing Post-Adolescents

초록

This study attempted to explore the experiences of immigrant youth in the career decision-making process at the point of becoming post-adolescents. To this end, we purposively sampled three immigrant teenagers who had chosen their current career paths and then entered college or worked, and through several rounds of participant observation and in-depth interviews, their experiences were explored using the narrative inquiry procedure of Clandinin and Connelly (2000). As a result of the analysis, the participants experienced ‘changes and confusion' due to their immigration to Korea. However, through various experiential activities such as studying Korean in the community center and engaging in volunteer work, they underwent a process of ‘effort and reward,' leading to‘an integrated understanding’of themselves and the meaning of their professions. As a result, they made career decisions and as post-adolescents, they were further preparing and executing their plans more concretely. This study empirically demonstrates the significance of experiential interactions with the external environment as a key factor in the successful career decision-making process of mid-term immigrant adolescents. Lastly, based on the research findings, limitations of the study and directions for future research were suggested.
