Differences in sense of community and fear of missing out (FoMO) on adolescents’ fandom activities and the quality of peer relationships

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the sense of community and fear of missing out (FoMO) across clusters formed based on fandom activities and the quality of peer relationships among adolescents in South Korea. To achieve the above objective, 281 middle and high school students residing in Korea were analyzed. Using SPSS 30.0, a K-means cluster analysis was performed, resulting in the emergence of three clusters: “Fandom Active Engagement–Relationship Type”, “Fandom Peripheral Engagement–Isolation Type” and “Fandom Nonparticipation–Well-Adjustment Type”. Following this, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests were conducted, revealing significant differences in community sense and fear of missing out across the clusters. This study discussed fandom activities as a form of leisure outside of school and the quality of peer relationships in daily life, considering both the behavioral and psychological aspects of adolescents. It also provided basic information for practical intervention in adolescent guidance and counseling.
