A Study on the Meanings of Memory in The Train Leaves at Seven

초록

The purposes of this study were to examine the meanings of "memory" and "oblivion" in The Train Leaves at Seven by Shin Gyeong-suk and investigate the unconscious desire of its characters. Considering that the acts of story are acts of memory about certain events with a time and space interval between them, the memory and oblivion of the main character especially highlight in narrative become a strategic mode of writing. It is because oblivion is not an accidental event but a purposeful event caused by certain intention of refusing to remember according to Freud. That is, it is a psychological rejection of a memory one does not wish to recall. The main character, "I" am a voice actress at a broadcasting station. She has an amnestic disorder, losing "a certain time" in her college years. Those symptoms cause a crack in "my" daily life and make "me" feel some deficit in life. Eventually, "I," Kim Ha-jin, hits the road to "find the lost memory" with a "picture" from the past in her hand. The progression of narrative is a restoration process of memory. The truth of the lost memory is about guilty conscience that "I" wanted to hide or had a difficult time accepting. In the second half of the 1980s, "I" was interrogated by the police and blurted out the names of the students in the activist group including her boyfriend and pupil, who were accordingly arrested. She also had a miscarriage of her baby with her loving boyfriend due to the torture. "I" showed the reaction of "psychological reject" not to remember the events because of my guilty conscience that I forced those who she had to protect into a corner. However, her unconscious desire to recall her concealed memory 15 years after the events does not stem from her missing her old boyfriend. The past or memory is not a fixed entity but present thinking constantly being "re-recorded" and reorganized. "My" unconscious desire connected to my traces of memory can be reorganized in the present. Ha-jiin's unconscious desire is her hope for "harmonious family." Her memory left in her body or her "experience of separation between mom and baby" left in body-text is manifested as her desire for "harmonious family with a baby" in the crossroad of memory and oblivion in the present time after many years.
