A phenoemenological study on the travel experiences of families with developmental disabilities : Focused on the experience of family community

초록

This study aimed to understand the experience of traveling with developmental disabilities from a family community perspective through a phenomenological approach. In-depth interviews were conducted with adult family members who had traveled with individuals with developmental disabilities within the past year. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological research method. The analysis revealed four themes: ‘The weight of disability borne by the entire family’, ‘The accumulation of internal conflicts’, ‘Travel as a means of family support and commitment’, and ‘Building family bonds through travel’, along with twelve meaning units and 127 meaningful statements. These themes suggest that travel for families with members who have developmental disabilities plays an important role in enhancing understanding and bonding among family members, beyond simply serving as an opportunity for rest. This study sheds light on the travel experiences of families with developmental disabilities from a family community perspective, providing implications for the development of tourism programs tailored to these families and for the improvement of social support systems. Additionally, it can serve as an important foundational resource for understanding the complex meanings and values associated with travel for families with developmental disabilities.
