초록

The purpose of this study was to identify the psychological differences between the shame-proneness and the guilt-proneness. For this purpose, this study examined how shame-proneness and the guilt-proneness were related to parenting attitudes, motivation for self-determination, and adaptation to school life. The participants were 346 junior high school students and high school students(169 males and 177 females) in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, Korea. The main results of this study were as follows: First, there existed a positive correlation between parenting attitude of rejection and the shame-proneness. Also, there existed a positive correlation between parenting attitude of emotional warmth and the guilt-proneness, and the same tendency also existed between parenting attitude of rejection and guilt-proneness. Second, in terms of motivation for self-determination, a positive correlation was found between the shame-proneness and extrinsic motivation. On the contrary, a positive correlation was found between guilt-proneness and intrinsic motivations. Finally, there were no relations between the shame-proneness and adaptation to school life. However, a strong and positive correlation was found between the guilt-proneness and adaptation to school life. Implications of this study were discussed.
