Introducing Market Competition in Electricity Industry and the Smart Grid

초록

Electricity is different from other products in many ways. It cannot be economically stored in large scale, and its substitutabilities in supply and demand are both very low. As a result, the short-term price elasticities of its supply and demand are extremely low, and real time pricing at the retail level is impractical due to the nature of its consumption. These attributes can cause market failures and stymie the introduction of market competition in the power industry. Smart grid can change this by changing the nature of electricity as a product. As real time pricing become a practical option, the price elasticity of power demand increases and mitigating the problem of supply shortage under peak demand. However, a successful introduction of smart grid itself requires a market structure that aligns the interest of the beneficiaries of smart grid and those to burden the cost.
