초록
This paper has attempted to investigate the relationship between a traveler to ancient capitals and travel space during the colonial period by reviewing the Gyeongju travel writings during this period under the meaning of modernity – colony – consumption-centered popular culture. The purpose of this paper is to examine the existence of historical places that were formed through travelers’ awareness during the colonial period. First, the impact of the view of natural history on the awareness of Gyeongju as an ancient capital has been investigated. A traveler and travel space are separated from each other with a knowledge system between them. They target the contents that have been described under the name of modern studies. In other words, Gyeongju is suggested as the text that should be read and analyzed by a traveler. In colonial circumstances, a traveler can easily become a passive visitor who watches a movie at theater that is established by the Japanese archeological knowledge system. On the contrary, the travelers to Gyeongju try to see the landscape of Gyeongju with their own perspective. This kind of trial can be sensed in the travel sketches written by Lee Byeong-gi and Jeong In-bo. However, it is reasonable to see them as an exception. A travel to ancient capitals has double sides in that it awakens the national heritage confined in the Japanese archeological cultural scheme. The influence of consumption culture that settled in Joseon during 1920-30s can also be added. Under these circumstances, travelers to Gyeongju existed as the masses or consumers who visually consumed the history and territory of Joseon, which is the result of the mixture between the imperial characteristics from natural history-based classification and the consumption culture of capitalism. Considering the investigations above, Gyeongju, the tradition of Joseon during the colonial period, has emerged in correlation with the imperial archeological knowledge system. Therefore, this paper has focused on the point of view through which Gyeongju is discovered as the space of the past or tradition. Furthermore, how the newly discovered and organized past and the related territory of Joseon were seen as visually consumed products has been investigated.
