The Philosophy of Theory for Cyberspace

초록

The objective of this study is to explain the nature of cyberspace technology by analyzing cyberspace from the viewpoints of instrumentalism, social constructivism, and the theory of autonomous technology, which are the major positions of the theory of technology, and discussing related issues. From the viewpoints of instrumentalism and social constructivism, cyberspace is analyzed as an instrument used for humans or as the realization of social values, and from the viewpoint of the theory of autonomous technology, cyberspace technology is considered autonomous, moving by its own rules beyond human control. However, the positions of instrumentalism and social constructivism cannot explain the characteristic of cyberspace that moves dynamically apart from human control. On the contrary, the theory of autonomous technology presents an explanation compatible with the dynamic aspect of cyberspace. According to the theory of autonomous technology, cyberspace is an autonomous technology that moves by its own rules and influences human life. However, the theory of autonomous technology has the problem of overlooking the autonomy of humans. I believes that such a problem in the theory of autonomous technology comes from the dichotomous view of cyberspace and humans, and suggests that cyberspace should be viewed as ‘cyborg’ technology that connects humans and technology.
