Effects of Structural Elements of Street on the Pedestrians’ Path Choice

초록

The aim of this paper was to find the street factors that encourage walking by focusing on pedestrians’ path choices according to their preferences and street structures. Therefore, we performed a virtual reality experiment with nine types of street structures based on field survey results. The analysis of pedestrians’ preferences for street structure environments revealed that diagonal streets were selected the most out of the nine types. In particular, the intersection angle chosen the most was 35°. The results of the analysis on the importance of structural factors for path choice showed that the following factors(in order importance) were considered significant: type and usage of acute-angle lot by intersection angle, intersection angle, and open-space ratio of building frontage when selecting diagonal streets. The results of the analysis of pedestrians’ path choices in the different structure environments showed that most pedestrians preferred the acute-angle lot low-rise building and the obtuse-angle lot high-rise building at 35°. The logistic regression analysis revealed that the significant factor was the intersection angle at these two intersections. Consequently, this paper demonstrated that pedestrians prefer diagonal streets at intersections, and when selecting diagonal streets, structural factors have an effect on path choice.
