Energy consumption characteristics analysis of thermoelectric modules assisted radiant cooling panel

초록

This paper proposes a thermoelectric module radiant cooling panel (TEM-RCP) with a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS). The radiant cooling panel is widely used in a decoupled system as a parallel cooling unit which implies decoupling of ventilation and air-conditioning functions. The DOAS treats latent loads from outside air intake and a radiant cooling panel removes sensible loads in the indoor space. In this study, three cases of radiant cooling panel with a DOAS were simulated to estimate the energy consumptions. The conventional ceiling radiant cooling panel (CRCP) was considered as a reference case. And two types of TEM-RCP were selected which used water and air for heat rejection at the hot side of TEM. Mathematical simulation models were developed, and the operating and annual energy consumptions for all three cases were estimated. The results indicated that the thermal performance was satisfied in all cases including the proposed systems. The results showed that the TEM-RCP could not make energy savings compared with the CRCP due to the low coefficient of performance (COP) of TEM. However, the additional energy consumption was only 5% in the water-cooled type. Therefore, the possibility of using water-cooled type TEM-RCP was observed considering many advantages of TEM such as compact size, no refrigerant, no moving part, no noise, fast response, fast and accurate temperature control.
