A Study on the Cinematic Optics in Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Movie Wife of a Spy : Focusing on the Gap between Seeing and Knowing

초록

Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Wife of a Spy is a movie about ‘optics’, ‘seeing’, ‘knowing’, and ‘kino eye’. The movie deals with the subtle gap between seeing and knowing, showing the covert physical and emotional movements of characters reacting to the film. The different desires of the characters surrounding the film collide quietly and violently. Various indoor spaces are transformed into theaters, and characters continue to cross between the darkness and light inside the enclosed theater. The act of watching a film containing Japan’s terrible war crimes overlaps with the spy’s behavior. Couples reach different understandings and move in different paths while watching the same film. The husband is convinced that he is looking further and more accurately than his wife, who has insufficient visual abilities. He is in a hegemony of vision that he can properly control what he sees. On the contrary, the wife sees the horrors of the film and reaches complex feelings such as attachment to her husband, jealousy, and longing. After being betrayed by her husband and trapped in a mental hospital, she faces the crucial truth of a miserable defeat. The truth was not well seen in the opening, but in the ending, it ends as the world approaches. As a result, all characters fail to see correctly, but the wife is the least failed. The film questions Japan’s collective consciousness, which still does not see or try to see the truth of its past history, by dealing with the view of the truth in an era of violent war.
