The Impact of Firm-specific Characteristics on the Chance of Becoming Female Executives

초록

In finance and insurance as well as culture related industries, HCCP reports there is no female executive. The female executive ratio is higher in IT related industries such as electronics, software, and database. However, on average, female executives account for approximately 1% of total executives. Further, the female executive ratio over female regular worker is less than 0.1%, which shows that the chance being female executives is extremely low. These statistics are very disappointing aspects to female workers as women economic participation becomes more importantly considered recently. According to empirical results, firms with defensive strategy are more likely to have female executives. When it comes to HR system, individual evaluation and corporation evaluation increases the chance to be female executives. Between owner management and CEO management, the former is more favorable to women executives. Considering that the firm size with owner management system is smaller than that with CEO management system, large corporations toward CEO systems is less likely to promote women to executive positions. Combining the empirical findings of the paper, one can say that firms with defensive competitive motivation prefer women executives than firms with aggressive competitive motivation.
