디지털 환경에서의 시각 이미지에 대한 청소년 비주얼 리터러시 수준 분석

Most adolescents in Korea use digital devices and spend significant time in digital environments. Consequently, national education policies have shifted towards emphasizing digital literacy. However, most of these policies emphasize the use of digital media and national language education and do not emphasize the use of visual images. Given that communication in the digital environment often relies on visual images, there is a need to assess and improve visual literacy in the digital environment. This study aims to assess the level of visual literacy among Korean adolescents and explore the significance of group differences in their level of visual literacy. The study surveyed 286 adolescents attending middle and high schools in Gyeonggi Province and measured their level of visual literacy in the digital environment. Visual literacy levels were compared across various groups based on gender, residential area, academic achievement, duration of smartphone use, and smartphone proficiency. The study found that gender and smartphone use duration affect visual literacy in the digital environment. Based on the study’s results, this study suggests that education on visual literacy should begin in the early elementary school years to promote visual literacy in the digital environment. Furthermore, efforts should be made to address the gender disparities in visual literacy. By prioritizing visual literacy education, Korean adolescents can improve their ability to communicate in digital environments effectively.
