초록
Enormous disruption to our normal lives has become the biggest challenge for ordinary, healthy citizens in the time of the global pandemic. Implementing structure into our daily lives is critical to maintain health, productivity, and social and emotional well-being. Individuals with autism may find it particularly challenging to adapt to a new norm, as during the current pandemic. The purpose of this study is to design and develop a mobile game that can support the disrupted daily routines and overall life quality of individuals with autism. To help them establish and maintain healthy routines, through a formative study, we investigate the difficulties they are confronting and identify four key design requirements (e.g., physical activity, diet, mind control, sleep). We then develop RoutinAid, a gamified smartphone app designed to break the identified key requirements down into smaller steps and celebrate each accomplishment. Our two-week field study reveals that individuals with autism make micro plans for daily routines through RoutinAid, perform in-game quests with self-reports, and actively manage their routines with celebratory interactions. We discuss salient design considerations for future development of daily routine management apps for individuals with autism.
