초록

This study attempts to look into Hollywood's dominance in the world film market from the perspective of cultural studies, I adopt Foucault and other post-structuralist theories in order to scrutinize the practice of cultural power in the market by Hollywood. The Korean film industry is in the process of restructuring the entire system including production, distribution and exhibition, The struggle over the Screen Quota policy between Korea and the US, particularly in the course of Free Trade Agreement, has been the major force that directed Korean film people to transforming the system. Facing crisis of the Korean film industry, Korean people ironically pursue the model of Hollywood though the policy objective was designed to defeat it, This illustrates applicability of Foucauldian concept of power to the contemporary film market. International co-production is the most active and progressive strategy that the Korean film industry has adopted to surmount the present crisis. Although international co-production, particularly with Hollywood, has created ample discourse in Korean society with hopeful vision, there is few project that has actually come to the ground. This study attempts to disclose everyday business practices inside Hollywood that hinder equal participation in international film co-production between two countries. I have conducted in-depth interviews with producers and directors of Hollywood majors as well as those of independent film companies in America. For comparison, French co-production system is also studied.
