The Relationships between Narcissism and Career Success: A Moderated Mediation Model of Self-Efficacy and Psychological Safety

This study aimed to investigate the constructive aspects of narcissism, which is considered negative, and to explore strategies to mitigate its negative impact on organizations. To this end, we conducted to test the mediating effect of self-efficacy and the moderated mediating effect of psychological safety on the relationship between narcissism and career success. Based on the responses of 397 employees working in general companies in Korea, regression analysis and bootstrapping were used to analyze the relationship between the variables. The findings of this study are outlined as follows. Firstly, narcissism demonstrated a positive influence on career success. Secondly, the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between narcissism and career success was established. Thirdly, psychological safety was identified as a moderator in the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between narcissism and subjective career success, although not on objective career success. Finally, we provided implications on individual and organizational dimensions and suggested the need for subsequent research based on the limitations.
