초록

I interpreted the current and future value of the Tripitaka Koreana from a stand-point of cultural studies. Buddha’s words had been recorded in a form of the tripitaka after passing through the memory of Ananda and the Sacred Multitudes. The Chinese Tripitaka is the only great container which anchored of all the memories of Buddha’s words. The Tripitaka Koreana is the oldest one of existing Tripitakas printed from woodblocks. Buddha’s words do not agree with tripitaka-text and interpretation. The memory is influenced by the limit of language, reference system,mechanism of human body, form and structure, ideology, and code. These factors make differences. The difference between meaning and truth is ‘between’ differences. The Tripitaka Koreana is the original text of Buddha’s words in which simulation can not substitute in the age of the crisis of representation. It will play a role of the original which produces numerous copies. The Buddhist ritual for the Tripitaka Koreana functions as the messenger between the sacred and the secular. The more the stories and facts abou tthe Tripitaka Koreana are internalized in the minds of the participants in this ritual, the faster they free themselves from ātmamāna. So, they pursue co-existence between self and others, and head toward communitas. In the 21st century, the Tripitaka Koreana is supposed to be interactive media through social network service. There is no boundary between sender and receiver, and numerous hypertexts can be transmitted, interpreted and produced ceaselessly,as though on an internet. We must get rid of myth about the Tripitaka Koreana, and look and study it in the light of difference. The Tripitaka Koreana is a product of the communication of knowledge and information and a model of glocalization in East Asia. Not only Buddha’s words are in the Sutra but also the stories about the Tripitaka Koreana are the other tripitaka-text. This plays a role of absence-text for the sutra-text as a presence text, and it generates inter-textual meanings in the relation of inter-dependant origination. These meanings will shed light on our lives, and open a new horizon.
