World Literature Education for Korean Language Teachers

초록

This study is about comments on a course delivered in a college of education among cases of ‘classical education,’ which receives a lot of attention. Recently, among changes in university courses for general education, interest in ‘reading books of culture’ has stood out. Department of Korean Language Education, College of Education, Hanyang University accepted such change and opened the course <Reading Classical literature for Korean Language Teachers>. The aims of this course are as follows. ∘Know the pleasure of reading classical literature. ∘Broaden the understanding of classical literature. ∘Understand others by rediscovering the perception of literature culture and history. These aims are to extend the functions of literature. That is, the aims ultimately help students acquire the understanding of others, improving their qualities as global citizens by rediscovering the perception of literature culture and history through various literature of the world. Six literary works―Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, King Lear by William Shakespeare, La Peste by Albert Camus, The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor M. Dostoevsky―were selected as the works to be covered in the course. As for classes delivered in the course, general classes and presentation-led classes were carried out every other week. General classes focused on understanding the social and cultural backgrounds of works and the authors' biological factors. Students’ presentation-led classes were carried out in analysis and discussion. While presentation teams are making presentations, other students gave feedback on the presentations on presentation evaluation paper in accordance with evaluation items. Evaluation items were to examine the originality of presentation content, the logicality of presentation composition, understanding of works and cooperation among team members. Students’ satisfaction with the classes was very high. Encountering world literature as well as Korean literature is to broaden experience and deepen understanding of others. While teams were giving presentations, students asked questions and discussed very aggressively. Even rather passive students made acute criticisms and analysis in their report. The sayingyou can see as much as you knowhas been proved by presentation classes by students. In addition, the pleasure of literature has spread to the pleasure of classes. If there are any regrets about this study, it is that the works selected here were mostly Western literature. In accordance with increased awareness of multi-cultural age, it is necessary to examine the literature of the Third World as well.
