초록

A discussion on modernity has been extensively explained and questioned by researchers of classical literature in the early period. Representative studies of classical literature present a view of considering Saseolsijo or japga as prehistory or sprouting of modern poetry. They contain nationalistic impulse to understand Korean literary history from the perspective of internal continuity and reflect the view of history that literary history is carried forward lineally from ancient to medieval and to modern times. One of the most distinguishing example of them is to see Saseolsijo of late Choson as the same continuum of modern poetry. However, researchers of later generation proved that this diagram heavily reflected emotional ethno cultural centrism. Up until now, there have been several misdirected sampling of looking for the clue of modernity from Saseolsijo and the process of confirmation was followed by. Recent researches have four theories; originated from Saseolsijo, mixture of various poetic genres of enlightenment period, influence of new style poem by Choe, Nam-seon, originated from Joo, Yo-han or Kim, Ok. A discussion on modernity in modern Korean poetry has entered a new phase now. It is moving forward from the stage of describing phenomenon in which researchers look for signs of modernity from individuality of content and realization of modern poetry in form, to the stage of epistemological, aesthetic exploration on whether those signs truly belong to the accomplishment modernity. Poetic subjects of this period remain to the characteristics of transition period in that poems of early modern period clearly express the process in which modern subject is being formed based on ‘individuality’ and ‘independent decision’, however, fall short of the process in which they stand up as a critical subject who looks at the stage of a period generally. Never- theless, breaking from medieval forms, sensitivity on world civilization and source of the will to form a new subject have done important role in the literature of this period. These aspects of early modern poetry is connected to the period of definite settling down and expansion of modern poetry facing most vigorous and refined period of literary coterie magazines around 1920s.
