Purpose: This study aims to examine if and to what extent study habits and strategies help learners adapt to online learning contexts and improve their learning outcomes in the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: An online survey was developed to identify learner use of study habits and strategies. The scale adopted some items from previous studies, and included newly constructed items to examine learner experience of remote instruction. The online survey was conducted in the fall of 2021, and 229 undergraduates responded to the questionnaire. Results: The findings of the study indicate that the students who regularly reviewed study materials and used effective study strategies obtained higher GPAs than those who did not. Moreover, those who had completed pre-recorded video lectures for the same course in one day had higher GPAs than those who had not. Value: Taken together, these findings suggest the need for training self-directed study habits and strategies and raising learner awareness of effective strategies. Study strategy instruction and awareness raising will contribute to enhancing the quality of remote teaching and learning.
