억압된 자기와 古都 평양의 표상
초록
In the modern literature of Korea, the discussion on old capitals has been made from the archaeological point of view in relation to the colonial rule of Imperialism. Pyeongyang is considered an old capital along with Gyeongju and Buyeo, but its implication is not restricted. In this sense, Pyeongyang is differentiated from other old cities. Its name, location, uncertainty, ambiguous existence and strong sense of identity as a place are important factors in understanding Pyeongyang. For this reason, the recognition of Pyeongyang during the Japanese colonial period should not be restricted to archeological discourse. Focusing on Pyeongyang’s unique features, this report deals with Pyeongyang’s representation as found in travel essays written during the Japanese colonial period. In particular, the implication that Pyeongyang has as a modern representation is found from a broader point of view, breaking away from its imperialistic/colonial boundaries. First, the inclination the axis of the past time and another axis of the present time create decides its representation. It is classified into present, imagination and the space in-between. The complex meaning of Pyeongyang was divided into three: 1) progressive place in which modern civilization and industry can be realized, 2) feminized non-existence or space in imagination as a modern being and 3) the space where Pyeongyang living in the past and dead in the present cross. And there are two roads of journey (Pyeongyang for Japanese toward the colonial period and Peongyang toward Dangun are contrasted). The divided attitude of Lee Gwang-su about the historical place, Pyeongyang of Dangun, was also discussed in the process. Pyeongyang is the space for comfort and pacification. Such a feature was created as the repressed sentiment of Pyeongyang during the Joseon Dynasty and repressed Korean sentiment during the Japanese colonial rule met. This is why cultural representations about Pyeongyang are repeatedly reproduced from the Joseon Dynasty until today. Pyeongyang has existed as a mythical place in our cultural history rather than its historical reality which was emphasized as a space in the history. When its mythicization is emphasized, its existence does not have significant meaning. Pyeongyang should be considered without relation to its historical value as an old capital or historical myth.
