교양소설에 나타난 음식과 그로테스크 - 오수연의『부엌』을 중심으로 -

초록

This paper presents an investigation into The Kitchen, a series novel by Oh Su-yeon, from two perspectives. It examined its characteristics as a Bildungsroman on the one hand and approached it in the grotesque aesthetics on the other hand. It falls under the category of growth novels, given its stories and the writer's statement. When the world exhibited by its speaker, "I," is taken into account along with her reflection on life and maturity, however, the category will not be enough to express the novel's unique nature. There are two female speakers in the series novel that have moved to India for study(the speaker "I" in What Happened in the Kitchen?" and I Am Food is different the speaker "I" in The Glory on the Land). As far as "I" am concerned, vegetarian and meat diet is not a simple matter of food taste, but a complex one with social status and power inherent in it. As the predator-prey relations are revealed in the repeating structure of "Kirtimukha," a myth of India, the grotesque aesthetics is naturally embodied by food and the body. "I" get to recognize a "sense of atonement" in the ritualistic cannibal custom in the process of investigating the missing case of "Damo," who is her predecessor studying in India, and a mature attitude as a global citizen in her humane relations with a maid called "Raj." The series novel allows the readers to discover the aspects of Bildungsroman by depicting a youth of strong mobility understanding her relations with the society and the world.
