Hart’s Reading of Descartes’s Notion and Its Problems

초록

‘Notion’ plays a central role along with ‘idea’ in Cartesian philosophy, especially in epistemology, as in other modern philosophers. Descartes uses ‘idea’ mainly in his Discours and Meditationes, but sometimes considers ‘notion’ as synonymous with ‘idea’. However, in the Principia philosophiae, it is brought to the fore to the extent that it is almost equal to ‘idea’. In his treatise “Descartres’s ‘Notions’”, Hart considers ‘notion’ in relation to the ‘simple nature’ of Regulae, the ‘innate idea’ of Discours and Meditationes, the ‘simple notion’ of Principia philosophiae, and the ‘primary notion’ of the two letters to Elizabeth in 1643, and it is also argued that Descartes’ theory of innate idea begins with the Discours, goes through Meditationes, and reaches its culmination in the Notae in Program. In this article, I pointed out the problems or misreadings of Hart’s reading of Descartes’ ‘notion’.
