The purpose of this study is to examine the publishing activity of Japanese residing in Chosun and their awareness of Chosun found in it during the colonial era. They thought that Chosun literature could be used as very important material to understand Chosun and Chosun people while they were ruling Chosun. What have been studied can be summed up as below: To understand Chosun people profoundly, Shakuo began to study Chosun through the Society of Publishing Chosun’s Antique Books. He started to publish antique books before the annexation and regarded himself as ‘a guardian for research on Chosun’ and extended the area to Chosun and Manchuria as well. He mentioned that what needed to be done most urgently to rule Chosun properly was to get rid of Chosun people’s bad habits and evil spirit and cultivate them as civilized persons. Celebrating the annexation, Aoyagi investigated the circumstances of Chosun through the Research Society of Choson and continued to be involved in publishing activity. Among Japanese residing in Chosun, he is a person who wrote books the most that give information about their ruling of Chosun. Insisting that Chosun’s toadyism was attributed to the geographical characteristics and Chosun failed to escape from the pressure of major countries for that, he asked us to accept Japanese annexation of Chosun as a fate. Hosoi translated the collection of novels through Jayutogusa because he meant to introduce Chosun culture for the sake of ‘Naesun-Ilchae’. He concluded that Chosun’s collapse was resulted not from Japan’s invasion but from Chosun government’s maladministration and our ethnicity not equipped with any originality. The publishing activity of Japanese residing in Chosun did help lay the grounds for colonial rule in the period of forced ruling. In the 1920’s of cultural ruling, it was also used to figure out the problems of forced ruling and change their policy of ruling. In addition, it stimulated them to find out ways for assimilation to rule Chosun people better. They continued to be involved in publishing activity with a sense of mission while constantly urging both Japanese in their homeland and colonial officials in Chosun to realize their lack of culture as well as indifference and ignorance about colonized Chosun.
