국내 다국적기업의 글로벌정보시스템 성과에 대한 실증 연구

초록

Given the irreversible trend of globalization, multinational corporations (MNCs) have realized the significance of standardized global information systems (GISs) to promote their operational efficiency and adapt to local conditions simultaneously, which is called transnational strategy. With the cases of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system adopted by MNCs in Korea, this study develops a research model, composed of organizational characteristics factors, motivational factors and knowledge transfer mechanism factors, and then tests as to how these factors affect the performance of the adopted GISs. Organizational characteristics factors comprise similarity of the task environment between the headquarters and subsidiaries, dependence of subsidiaries on the headquarters in terms of their strategic roles and subsidiaries’ capability of absorbing new knowledge on the GIS. Motivational factors include willingness to acquire knowledge of the adopted GISs, trust of subsidiaries to the GISs and support from executives of local subsidiaries. Knowledge transfer modes consist of explicit methods of documentation and implicit ways of personal interactions. A hierarchical linear regression was conducted using 84 questionnaires collected from an initial sample of 218 Korean subsidiaries of foreign MNCs that had adopted ERP systems as their GISs. The results found that only the variables of dependence of, and trust of, subsidiaries in Korea did not significantly improve the performance of new GISs. This study provides MNCs with valuable managerial implications for successfully adopting GISs to integrate their global operations and help their organization sustain their competitive advantages.
