Energy Saving Potentials of Organic Rankine Cycle in a Liquid Desiccant and Evaporative Cooling-assisted Air Conditioning System

초록

A liquid desiccant indirect and direct evaporative cooling assisted 100% outdoor air system (LD-IDECOAS) has recently introduced as an alternative air conditioning system to conventional vapor compression-based systems. A liquid desiccant (LD) system was integrated to enhance cooling effect of indirect and direct evaporative coolers and the LD system dehumidifies the process air. The LD-IDECOAS is a thermal-driven cooling system due to the LD. When the LD system operates in summer, it requires relatively low-grade heat source for regenerating the weak desiccant solution. Therefore, this study evaluated the primary energy saving potentials of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) combined with the LD-IDECOAS based on simulation study. A 2-kW ORC driven by solar thermal energy is applied in this study. The primary energy consumption of solar ORC with LD-IDECOAS is compared with LD-IDECOAS served by conventional grid power and boiler to estimate energy saving potential in the cooling season operation. The results showed that the LD-IDECOAS with the solar ORC saved 44% of primary energy compared to that of the system with conventional power supply and boiler.
