초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between counselor experience and client-rated working alliance and the moderating effects of counselor characteristics perceived by clients. The survey was conducted for 133 counselor-client dyads who had engaged in individual counseling at a university counseling center or a youth counseling institute located in Seoul and Gyeong-gi. The main findings were as follows. First, counselor experience did not have a significant influence on the client-perceived working alliance. Second, when the client is highly aware of the counselor’s expertise, a higher level of counselor experience was associated with higher ratings of overall working alliance. Specifically, for the clients who perceived their counselor as more attractive, more expert, or trust-worthier, counselor experience was positively related to their perceptions of agreement on tasks. Likewise, for the client group who saw the counselor more expert or trust-worthier, counselor experience was positively correlated with client ratings of agreement on counseling goals. This study is meaningful to shed light on dynamic interactions of factors affecting the counselor-client working alliance, particularly the interplay between counselor experience, categorized as one of objective/cross-situational traits, and client-perceived counselor characteristics, as one of subjective/therapy-specific states.
