조선 士人의 만남과 절교 -李楨과 曺植의 사례를 중심으로-

Breaking ties does not end with antagonism and separation between two people, but sometimes the frontline expands into a fight with the opposing camp. A case that shows this well is the breakup of relations between Namwu Choo-soo and Yangwu Lee-joo. It has been known that Nammyung and Guam had been dating for quite a long time through morality, but broke off their relationship due to the ‘indecent affair with Ha Jong-ak’s second wife’. Of course, it is true that this incident played a decisive role, but it cannot be said to be the only cause. The severance of relations between Nammyeong and Guam can actually be seen as a matter of three parties, including Guam's teacher, Toegye, rather than a matter of both. Regardless of Toegye's intention, it is clear that he had a great influence on the feud between Nammyeong and Guam. This incident, which seemed to end with a simple severance of relations between the two, led to sniping and clarification between the disciples of Nammyeong and Toegye, and resulted in the descendants of the two families writing articles clarifying their positions. In the end, it became a decisive opportunity for the Nammyeong school and the Toegye school to diverge, and they were divided into northerners and southerners, so it can be seen that one individual's breakup led to the divergence of intellectual history. Toegye passed away in 1570, Guam in 1571, and Nammyeong in 1572, respectively, and the story of these three people came to an end. There is no point in arguing who is right or wrong in the issue of breaking up relations. However, if the two did not break off, if Guam served as a great bridge between Nammyeong and Toegye's school, and if Jeong In-hong did not fall and the Nammyeong school grew up on an equal footing with Toegye's school, it is inevitable to feel regret when imagining what it would have been like. If everything worked out as imagined, wouldn't it be possible for Joseon's studies, which were dominated by Neo-Confucianism, to expand into a more colorful spectrum?
