Analysis of Trends in Unmanned Planetary Exploration Rovers and Deduction of Basic Specifications for Private-Led Rovers

초록

This study analyzed recent rover cases and technological developments in the field of unmanned planetary exploration and developed basic specifications for private-led rover exploration mission planning. Quantitative data of planetary exploration rovers, such as weight, volume, mission duration, energy consumption, and payload functions`, were visualized and compared. The rover capacities are broadly categorized as 10kg or less, 10kg to 100kg, and over 100kg. Depending on the weight, missions and energy consumption (e.g., thermal insulation systems and communication modules) can be considered proportionally on the mission duration. The primary planetary destination for government-led exploration is Mars, which is characterized by long-distance, high-risk missions. Private-led exploration focuses on minimizing payload capacity through miniaturization and weight reduction to reduce the exploration costs. The Moon, which is closer to Earth than Mars, is the starting point. Basic mission requirements include technological reliability in communication, navigation, and data processing. Furthermore, the technical requirements for physical elements such as drive and navigation for planetary exploration must be met.
