A Qualitative Study on Client Access to Counselor Personal Information: Focusing on Experience in Social Networking Sites(SNS)

초록

The purpose of this study is to explore in depth the experiences of the clients who have accessed the personal information of the counselor on SNS. Individual interviews were conducted with eight college students who had experience of accessing the counselor personal information disclosed in SNS and of receiving more than three counseling sessions. Data were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research methodology. Results indicated that the clients perceived private spaces of the counselor in social media as a dock for relieving vigilance, the place where the counselor is called by his/her name and re-appeared, the space where the clients feel remote presence of the counselor, and another world where the clients can reunite with counselor. Although client access to the counselor personal information on SNS has promoted familiarity and homogeneity for counselors, it has also been shown to bring discomfort, such as fears of working alliance cracks, anonymity, and relative deprivation of happiness. Based on the results of the study, implications for future research were discussed.
