Cultural and Ethical Aspects of Critical Thinking Pedagogy

In this paper I argue that the standard justifications for critical thinking pedagogy are culturally relative in the sense that they presuppose values that are dominant in Western cultures, but which are marginal in certain Asian cultures. Furthermore, I argue that critical thinking pedagogy raises ethical concerns in light of its promotion of the value of individual autonomy at the expense of other, more social values.
