초록
In the Czech Republic, which communist regime collapsed in the wake of the Velvet Revolution, domestic films shown a steady rising tendency compared to Eastern European countries that experienced a similar transformation. Within this flow, a film director of particular interest is Jan Svěrák. His films were highly acclaimed for both its cinematic quality and its popularity. And that made him a representative figure in the Czech film industry. Therefore, this study recognizes the importance Jan Svěrák has in the Czech contemporary film history and tries to derive the propensity of his works. And for that, this study will target six feature film released by Jan Svěrák in the 1990s and 2000s. As a result, Jan Svěrák’s films have three tendencies: First, his works reveal a sense of reflection of social reality and criticism of history. Second, critical views of society and history lead to optimistic perceptions of reality, suggesting a better direction for Czech society to move forward. Third, based on Czech tradition of worshiping women, misogyny such as female worship and sexual objectification of women is revealed. And these three tendencies are evident in works from the 1990s, early in Jan Svěrák’s career, to the 2000s when he was active.
