A Study on the Impact Factors of Pedestrian Path Choice on Intersections

초록

The purpose of this research is to find the factor behind choosing diagonal streets atintersections. Pedestrian field of vision and pedestrian path choices were analyzed after building3D virtual reality models of various intersection environments and finding the preferredintersection environment and diagonal streets through 1:1 experiments. The test results showfirst that the preferred intersection environments are 10°, 20°, and 30° and that all three arepreferred more than straight-line streets. Second, analysis of the viewable area per degree ofintersection show that degrees less than 30° and 70° revealed a wider area than 40° or 50° andthat wider viewable areas led to the more frequent selection of diagonal roads. Additionally, the proximity of intersection and view point selection resulted in choosing diagonal roads, which shows that street layout environment and field of vision influence the path choice ofpedestrians. The significance of this study is that it demonstrates that the street layoutenvironment formed by diagonal roads at intersections outside of the internal physicalenvironment of roads, in other words the field of vision of pedestrians regarding entrance, influence pedestrian path choice.
