The Storytelling Direction of the East Asian Mermaid Narrative in the Post-Human Era

초록

This thesis is to examine the possibility of storytelling of the classic narratives, among them, the mermaid narrative, which is considered to play an important role in the cultural industry in the post-human era. Mermaid’s hybridity and female leading narratives are in line with the new human form required by today’s post-human era. The mermaid Narratives have the advantage of being familiar with and newly adapted to Asian mythology, as Andersen’s 〈Little Mermaid〉 is known all over the world, which is very close and different from Western mermaids. This is a very attractive factor when using mermaid stories as cultural contents. Thus, I have investigated and organized the shapes and characteristics of mermaids from various literatures so far and considered the direction of storytelling of mermaid narratives in terms of post-humanity. I looked at the direction of the new storytelling, which is differentiated from the existing mermaid-related contents, focusing on the characters, abilities and conflict structure aspects of mermaids. In terms of mermaid characters, it was considered that the passive mermaid image, which had previously been described as an objectified by the male-centered perspective, should be stripped off and recreated as a subjective woman that fits the spirit of the present era. I also suggest applying the image of repaying the kindness shown in the mermaid’s narrative to set her as a righteous person who keeps faith and pays back the grace. Regarding the mermaid’s ability, the mermaid’s ability was investigated in various mermaid-related literatures and presented various mermaid’s abilities based on records. In terms of conflict structure, I thought about conflicts between minorities and humans, conflicts between civilization and the natural world, and conflicts between greed and selfishness of human beings. Mermaids at the border between humans and fish have been perceived as inferior to monsters in the past, but in the post-human era, when attention is paid to hybridity and animal nature, they can be both the subject of story and the overwhelming presence of humans.
