초록

This study explored the structure and meaning of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut Gunwunggeori SSanggunwung dance, focused on the temporality and the spatiality. SSanggunwung dance of Gunwinggeori contains not only the principles of the negative and the positive within our dances but also the history of the Creation by Sirumal of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut. The association between SSanggunwung dance and the myth can be found in Seosamuga performed by the Miji and Sani of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut. As for Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut, the reason why the study on SSanggunwung dance is so important is that Gunwunggeori has the significance of oral literature that contains the history of the Creation and SSanggunwung dance has symbolic meaning in eliminating misfortune, which is the most basic function of a gut (exorcism), as an expression of a will for harmonious living among god, nature and human. Studying on the performance structure and meaning of SSanggunwung dance is deemed to have a proactive value and significance for the study on traditional dances divided from shamanism dances. The performance format of Gunwunggeori has its uniqueness in the change of the performers from hereditary shaman of exorcism rite to Miji (hereditary shaman) of SSanggunwung + Sani and then to Sani of Gunwungnojeonggi. SSanggunwung dance was performed in a form of the Gunwung-gut ceremony. It had a certain formality and rule in it and had a lot of impromptu moves in the process of exhilaration. This is also due to the on-the-spot nature of gut. Guwunggeori seems to be an aggregate of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut which might have a relation also with the spatiality and the temporality of Dodang-gut. Gut-chum is a dance to express the time and spatial phenomenon shown in ceremonies as a symbol through a human body. In SSanggunwung, the functions of the dance include a general function to purify the road along which Gunwoong-god comes and a symbolic function that a Seosamu (narrative shamanism) hides in the other side. This symbol is interpreted as the opposite relation (spatiality) of the negative and the positive and contains the temporality in the opposite relation. And at the center of time and space, mountains, villages and wells have sacredness as the area of the unification of man and god where they meet together. It was noticeable that SSanggunwung dance included a basic system of though from shamanism to pursue a complementary and harmonious living in an opposite relation rather than incompatible relation that dualistic elements in nature’s order, such as heaven and earth, night and day and god and human, did not make themselves incompatible each other. The performance of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut deserves its value for studies from the viewpoints of Korean literature, musicology, dance and cultural anthropology. Studying on the shamanism dance of Gyeonggi-do Dodang-gut shall be the process of understanding the formation and differentiation of the modern traditional dances and exploring the root of our dances.
