Research on Values and Dual-Process Theory : Application of Implicit Cognitive Measures

초록

This paper aims to review sociological and psychological literature on values and apply a newly developed methodological approach based on the dual-process theory to the research on values. Dual-process theory actively studied in the past decade in cultural sociology, specifies two different cognitive processes; System 1 indicates implicit and fast thinking, whereas System 2 refers to deliberate and slow thinking. The conventional way of surveying people could tap into both cognition; using survey data, the analysis of values and action (or any other attitudinal or behavioral outcomes) does not specify which cognitive process individuals use to process values. As recent sociological studies have shown, this paper claims scholars should separate these cognitive processes in value research and also utilizes a psychological survey technique called Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP) that taps into automatic, implicit cognition (System 1) only. By analyzing primary data of about 600 Korean adults, our findings show that the configuration of implicit values based on the AMP is somewhat different from value responses from conventional surveys. Also, implicit values have statistically significant associations with life satisfaction, whereas survey responses do not.
