초창기 언론법제 연구와 장용 교수의 기여에 관한 고찰
초록
Professor Young Chang is one of the first generation scholars in journalism and mass communication field in South Korea and has been acknowledged as the first scholar who did corner-stone research in media law area. This study reviewed how much the research and writings of Prof. Chang made contribution to the establishment of media law education and research and the formation of media law area as an independent academic field. It was found out that he was very influential in the journalism area. He received Ph.D. degree in the United States in 1967 and played a major role in introducing and implanting the American education and research system in journalism area to South Korea. He emphasized that the press freedom and the right to know are two most critical factors in democracy that we should make a proper balance with the right to reputation and privacy. He wrote some articles, books, and newspaper works related with journalism and media law. Among them, the book <The Press and Human Rights> was most well-known and important work that contributed to the establishment of media law area in methodology and theory. In this book, he analyzed libel cases comparing Korean media law with American media law in order to deliver the significance of freedom of the press and right to know. In addition, he introduced Q-method in journalism research which was not familiar at the time. In short, Prof. Chang’s researches can be evaluated to enhance the level of media law research as well as journalism research. Especially, they gave some implications to the media law scholars in the perspective of development in theory and methodology.
