A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of Chinese Counselors in South Korea Who Are in the Process of Forming the Counselor Professional Identity

초록

This study examined the experiences in the professional identity formation of Chinese counselors in Korea. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Chinese counselors in Korea who had more than two years of counseling experience after graduate school. The data were analyzed using the consensual qualitative analysis method. We derived four domains, including ‘efforts to improve the counselor professional identity’, ‘difficulties in the process of forming the counselor professional identity’, ‘the process of overcoming difficulties in forming the counselor professional identity’, and ‘the experience of developing the counselor professional identity’, which were classified into 9 categories and 34 subcategories. Based on the results of this study, it is meaningful to reveal the experience of the professional identity formation process of Chinese counselors in Korea. It is meaningful to provide basic data on the professional education and training of Chinese counselors in Korea, and to provide useful countermeasures to Chinese counselors in Korea who are experiencing confusion about their professional identity. Finally, the limitations of the study and suggestions for further study were discussed.
