Re - Reading of The Soul of Wind by Oh Jeong - Hee - With a focus on motifs -

초록

This study reviewed The Soul of Wind by Oh Jeong-hee, being conceived and differentiated by an effort to interpret the meanings of its motif and husband from a new perspective. The novel consists of a main motif, which is "running away from home," and two inserted motifs, which are Heonhwaga and The Road, an Italian movie. The motif of "running away from home" reveals the nature of the novel as a narrative to search for existence, while the inserted motifs of Heonhwaga and The Road are the "songs of reposing a soul" dedicated to Eun-su, the main character, and reveal the nature of the novel as a mourning narrative. In the novel, Eun-su ran away from home in total 11 times. She ran away from home two times before getting married: one during her childhood and the other during her girlhood. The remaining nine times happened after she got married. She ran away from home for the first time in her life because of the original childhood experience of witnessing the disaster inflicted upon her family during the war. As a girl, she ran away from home again because of her birth secret. Even after she got married and gave a birth, she made more attempts at running away from home. Those attempts of hers were tragic acts for her to find her own existence and roots. It is, however, difficult to conclude that she succeeded in exploring her existence by running away from home. After she ran away from home for the last time, she confirmed her root but had her severance from her husband and child solidified. The inserted motif of Heonhwaga is a device to remind that the "red" image of the novel is associated with death once again. It becomes a song of reposing a soul for Eun-su's ritual death along with The Road. The previous studies on the novel discussed Eun-su's husband, Ji Se-jung, as a character that did patriarchal and male-centric thinking and was in confrontational relations with her. He, however, reacted with compassion and sympathy every time she ran away from home, which makes it difficult to consider him as a symbolic male-centric character. He was also a victim of her running away from home who could not be excluded from the tragic magnetic field of war.
