A Study on the Film Director Danis Tanović: the Scars of Ethnic Conflict and Economic Stagnation in Post-Yugoslavia Era

초록

Danis Tanović is a film director from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Despite the difficult reality, he has continued to work as a film writer. By analyzing his film from a supervisory perspective, this paper wanted to see how the reality of the post-Yugoslavia era was being reflected in the film. The analysis was based on a total of seven of his feature films No Man’s Land(2001), L’enfer(2005), Triage(2009), Cirkus Columbia(2010), An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker(2013), Tigers(2014), and Death in Sarajevo(2016). As a result, the following results are obtained: First, Danis Tanovic has experience in creating documentaries while working as a war correspondent in the civil war, and based on these experiences, he has continued his consideration of war and ethnicity. Second, the Yugoslav region had to suffer economic and social chaos in accordance with the global order that was reorganized as of 1991. This situation is reflected in his work. In addition, one can confirm that the director points out not only his country’s problems, but also the global capital problem, and that he chooses a rather dark ending, along with his black comedy technique, could also be considered a supervisory feature.
