Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control Based on Model Predictive Control for Asymmetric Interior Permanent Magnet Motor

In this paper, a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy based on model predictive control (MPC) for asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) motor is proposed. Due to the asymmetric permanent magnet structure of the motor, the magnet torque and reluctance torque of the motor are maximized at a similar current angle. However, the mathematical model of the AIPM motor differs significantly from that of the conventional interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), so it is essential to develop a novel current control strategy. Firstly, introducing parameter as the angle of the maximum reluctance axis ahead of the magnet d-axis to re-characterize the mathematical model of the AIPM motor. According to this model, the MTPA control strategy of the motor is developed. Then, finite control set MPC is applied to predict the behavior of the currents. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in improving torque performance.
