A Study for Distance Teacher-Training System Development and Management Plan in Korea

At present, Korean Ministry of Education(MOE) supports development of various teacher training programs and distance education programs to solve some of the problems in the classrooms. The Law of Higher Education provide various ways to implement cyber education at universities. About seventy universities and fourteen corporations have partcipated in the pilot study, for last three years, as consortium or an individual university. In addition, based on the Law of Life Long Learning, starting March of 2001, Korean MOE accredited nine distance education institutions to offer degrees to 6000 students at a distance There are two different methods of professional development programs in Korea. Elementay teachers are trained at Normal Shools/Teachers' Colleges and junior and senior high school teachers are trained through university/college programs. Korean Ministry of Education identified the need for distance teacher training programs to minimize the teachers travel time and cost for training. Korean Ministry of Education offer incentives for in-service teachers for training during of after school hours. Thus, Korean teachers and the MOE are in search of improved professional development programs.
