Pope Francis’ Visit to South Korea and Korea’s Crisis Symptoms:A Critical Discourse Analysis of Media Coverage of Pope Francis’ Visit to South Korea

초록

This study critically examines a question of South Korea’s paradoxical facet of the 2014 ‘Pope Francis Syndrome’ as it witnesses general ruptures related to the crisis of political leadership that exist in the South Korean Society today. For this, we explore how the Pope Francis’ visit to South Korea galvanized publics’ desires and social imaginary on good leadership and ideal society. In doing so, this study utilized a critical discourse analysis in analyzing the four major daily newspapers’ articles. Our findings are as follows. First of all, media discourse signifies publics’ disappointments with politics in general due to the lack of responsible leadership and mutual communication, while public strongly draws their attention to Francis Pope’s unique leadership. Secondly, in line with this, public discourses against the state neoliberal policies and overall corporatization of society were formed. Futhermore, it shows that Pope makes a consistent effort to console young generation and provides them with courage and motivation. Thirdly, it signifies public’s social imaginary for social justice and social integration that are far from South Korea’s reality.
