초록
Dancing is a type of art expressed by the human body which has attempted to combine various ingredients and genres in order to maximize its expression. As many kinds of technologies have developed in the 20th century, objects have stood out as elements of expression and developed as an important medium for delivering an artist’s purpose. In other words, the object has played an important role as an accelerator of works of art in general, enabling diverse communication among genres. The role and function of objects can be divided into the ‘symbolic object’ and the ‘functional object’ in works of art. The ‘symbolic object’ plays a role as a messenger, delivering a theme and synopsis of artwork. The ‘functional object’ indicates a visualization function as one of the elements of work, creating new meanings and spaces in the artwork. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of objects by examining their function and nature through practical use of objects in Korean traditional dance. On “The East coast Byulshin Gut”, Korean traditional dance and popular art, shows its themes and purpose with the symbolism of a variety of objects in each Gutgeori. These objects are, so to speak, used symbolically and as messengers for delivering the meaning of dance. They are also used visually as functional objects which are aesthetical tools to show beauty with a purpose of pleasing God. The objects in “Soul, Sunflower”, a Korean creative dance and performing art, demonstrate Korean color and sentiment by the using tools of Gut and instruments of the traditional dance. It stands for three intentions; purification and preventing misfortune, pleasing God and finally, releasing the dead in peace. These ‘symbolic objects’ enhance the traditional signification. At the same time, with the application of different genre called ‘installation art’ in the artworks, the ‘functional object’ plays a role by dividing space, which creates new spatial formations and a three-dimensional space on stage which has symbolic meanings assigned to it. “Soul, Sunflower” has actively made the best use of traditional themes within Korean dance, in the modern sense and using objects of Gut, and developed as a representative Korean cultural product. These two works represent two types of Korean dance using Gut; traditional dance and creative dance. The objects of traditional dance mainly imply common meanings as ‘symbolic objects’. As these traditional objects have been created and modernized, development of performance progressed with alongside this transformation of tradition. Thus, the objects in Korean creative dance have a role as ‘symbolic objects’ in a functional way, suggesting themes and synopsis and directing the atmosphere. They also act as ‘functional objects’ that are constituents influencing the movement of dancers and creating new space. They have visual and instrumental effects through objects of installation art, image and stage lighting. In conclusion, the object in Korean dance imparts symbolic meaning to performance through expressive language and shows various new images, enabling expansion of expression and conveying meaning in a work of art. The objects in performance provide new experience which deviates from common values of the objects in question and stimulates the imagination of the audience.
