The International Dimension of North Korea’s Science and Technology System: A Scientometrics Analysis

초록

The purpose of the study is to examine structural characteristics of North Korea’s science and technology (S&T) system under the Kim Jong Un regime at the international level by employing a scientometrics analysis. In doing so, international SCIE papers authored by North Korean researchers over the period 2012-2019 are analyzed to uncover the system structure and dynamics based on the triple helix perspective. Using co-authored publications data indexed in Web of Science, this study performs a network analysis to delve into the structural patterns and features of North Korea’s scientific collaboration networks establishing at the international level. The analytical results reveal that their international collaboration network in S&T has quantitatively developed at a rapid pace in accordance with the reform of the university system under the Kim Jong Un regime. In order to make the shift toward a strong knowledge-based economy, North Korea has strived to adjust and restructure its S&T system. However, this study finds that there are several challenges to achieve successful transition in the S&T system.
