A Study on the Newsreel in Colony Chosun(Korea) after the Sino-Japanese War

초록

This study is on the newsreel of colonial Chosun(Korea) after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War (07/07/1937): the process of strengthening its position as the important media and of being placed in the center of the cultural policy. After the Sino-Japanese war, the newsreel begun to play a bigger role both in the industry and in the policy as the film propaganda had been emphasized. In colonial Chosun, the newsreel was frequently used as a vehicle of propaganda when the various types of rallies, which usually included both a lecture and a film screening, were held by the pro-government organizations, military organizations, government agencies, newspapers with the purpose of wartime mobilization. Especially, the activities of Maeil Sinbo(Korea Daily News) and Kyungsung Ilbo were stood out, from the film screening to the production. In this situation, so-called 'the news theater' such as Kyungil Munhua Movie Theater (opened in 1939) and Huasin Theater(opened in 1940) emerged in Chosun (Kyungsung), which showed newsreels intensively. And <Japan News> of the Japan Newsreel Corporation, which had begun to produce and distribute all the Japan's newsreels under one authority since June, 1940, also strengthened its position in Chosun. Furthermore, the policy on the production and screening of the newsreel was introduced, linked to the policy in Japan. And this tendency grew stronger after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
